About the symposium
The symposium explores themes of visibility, ephemerality and cultural memory present in Edward Woodman’s photographs, which document the art and artists of a key era in British art. Our expert speakers will investigate shifting approaches to art documentation from 1979 to 1999, and the ways in which photographic records have shaped perceptions of history and the art of the present.
Panellists and speakers include:
- Jo Bushnell, Director, Aspex Gallery
- Samantha Ismail-Epps, Researcher, Norwich University of the Arts and Lecturer in Art History, University of Suffolk
- Hugo Glendinning, Photographer and Film Maker
- Dr. Jo Melvin, Director of the Estate of Barry Flanagan, and Reader in Fine Art & Archives, Chelsea College of Art, University of the Arts London
- Lois Keidan, Director, Live Art Development Agency
- Guy Moreton, Artist and Associate Professor, School of Art, Design and Fashion, Solent University
- Keith Piper, Artist
- Woodrow Kernohan, Director, John Hansard Gallery
- Imogen Stidworthy, Artist
- Erika Tan, Lecturer, Fine Art, Central Saint Martins and Founding Member of the Asia-Art-Activism Research Network
- Gilane Tawadros, Chief Executive, DACS
- David Ward, Artist
- Mark Waugh, Art360 Foundation
The symposium coincides with the first retrospective of Edward Woodman’s seminal photographs at John Hansard Gallery, ‘Space, Light and Time: Edward Woodman, A Retrospective’, and the publication of ‘Edward Woodman: The Artist’s Eye’. The monograph was produced in collaboration between Art360 Foundation, John Hansard Gallery and Art/Books, and was made possible through Arts Council funding and the generosity of our donors.
The symposium will be followed by an informal drinks reception at John Hansard Gallery from 4.30pm - 6.30pm, when visitors will have a second chance to see the exhibition. A detailed agenda for the day will be available on our website soon.
Please note that spaces are limited and that the event may be photographed, filmed or recorded. Our venue is wheelchair accessible, but please contact us at contact@art360foundation.org.uk if you have any queries or require further information.
About Edward Woodman
Edward Woodman is one of the most significant photographers in the history of contemporary art in Britain. Throughout the 80s’ and 90s’ Woodman was the go-to person for art documentation by renowned artists including Damien Hirst, Cornelia Parker and Anya Gallaccio. In our recent documentary of Edward Woodman, produced by David Bickerstaff, Richard Wilson attests to Woodman’s technical finesse and exceptional sensitivity to art. Watch the documentary, nominated for the 2018 AHRC Research in Film Awards, here.
About Art360 Foundation
Art360 Foundation is an independent charity supporting artists and artists’ estates with archiving and legacy planning. In 2015 we received a grant from Arts Council England which enabled us to award 33 applicants grants of £6,000 each, alongside a programme of bespoke consultation. We are delighted to have supported Edward Woodman.
