About

Oxford Women's  Luncheon Club was founded in 1934 by two remarkable women, Mrs Munro, wife of the Rector of Lincoln College, and Mrs Webber who was closely associated with the department store of the same name, that then stood in the High Street. (Click here for Oxford Mail article)

The object of the Club was to bring together, in one social body, Oxford women from City and University. They met over lunch twice a term to hear a distinguished speaker. This tradition continues to the present day.

During the war years the Club was in abeyance, but it was restarted in 1952 by Mrs Munro who summoned the members then remaining. They unanimously elected Mrs Galbraith as Chairman and Mrs Symonds as Secretary. Mrs Galbraith served for five years and got the Club on its feet again. Mrs Symonds was Secretary for twenty six years and the friendly traditions of the Club are largely due to her.
