    Description

Family Life has changed in many ways over the past few decades. More families are facing ‘in work’ poverty, with both parents often working yet still relying on support from the state to make ends meet. There are more split families, with children spending weekends with mum or dad in different places.

In this Learning Hub, we’re going to focus on parents. This might sound like a strange focus on family life for youth workers, but it’s an aspect which we often overlook. We will be looking at:

    • What is it like being a parent in 2017? What are some of the issues they face?
    • What are the different styles of parenting, and how does how I was parented affect my work with young people?
    • How can we support the parents of the young people we work with?
    • Finally, what is our role as youth workers for young people who don’t have a parent?

This session is being delivered by Pippa Ankers, who lives in Maltby and has been working for Care for the Family for 9 years. She trains people to facilitate their Time Out for Parents series of courses in their local communities, and trains volunteers to support parents of children with additional needs. Prior to that, Pippa worked for the Diocese of Sheffield for nine years in Rotherham, working with parents of young children on a one to one basis and in groups.

The evening starts at 6.30pm with a sandwich and cake buffet, with the training running from 7-9pm. For more information, contact Jonathan Buckley on 07450 778678 or jonathan.buckley@ymcawhiterose.org.uk
