    Then the Yoga Fundamentals Course is perfect for you!

    This 6-week course will look closely at the foundations of a well-rounded practice- physical (asana) practice and beyond!

    We start each 2-hour session with alignment of yoga poses. We will take time to explore placement and anatomy of body alignment and importantly, variations of poses so that every individual practitioner can develop a practice suitable for them. All variations are ‘correct’ but knowing how to align the body in detail then opens up the potential for the individual to attain their full range of movement and strength.

    Additionally, Amanda will share knowledge of the broader aspects of yoga. This element of the course will weave together the principles of the ‘8-limbed path’ of yoga, of which asana (physical poses) are only one of the ‘limbs’. The others include key practices of breathing (pranayama), concentrated focus (dharana) and meditation (dhyana). These are all great skills to develop on the mat and radiate into our lives on many positive levels.

    As the great yoga master BKS Iyengar described, yoga develops integration of all these skills, bringing greater harmony, balance and peace to our whole lives. We will look at some of the ideas of great yoga teachers of the past including Iyengar, Pattabi Jois, Indira Devi and contemporary teachers including Sarah Powers, Judith Hanson Lasater and Paul Grilley. Also, we will consider some of the ‘sutras’ or yogic principles. These are the first acknowledged written account of yoga by Patanjali (a mysterious but enlightened figure!) almost 2000 years ago. These sutras still form the basis of yoga teaching and practice today.

    Each of the six sessions will be structured around specific poses e.g. forward bends, twists, balances and a selection of these will be looked at in detail for gaining accurate alignment. Time will be allowed for questions and refinements for individuals.

    We will then have a tea break to discuss relevant ideas and history from some of the great teachers (and sutras) and each session will conclude with a steady paced ‘flow’ practice and short meditation - bringing together all aspects of the session.

    There will be concentrated work but also lots of fun and creative discussion and exploration of the poses and ideas as you get to know and connect with other yogis on the course!

    By the end of the course you will have gained confidence and depth in your physical practice and have enjoyed learning about the inspirational and pretty magical ideas and context in which this ancient practice has evolved- and continues to evolve with every individual yogi, teacher or student, who steps onto their mat.

    Amanda is a fully qualified and certified yoga teacher. She teaches vinyasa flow, dynamic, hatha, yin, meditation and pre- and post-natal yoga. She is passionate about yoga and tirelessly fascinated by its amazing history and philosophy. She loves sharing the wonderful benefits of yoga and is very much looking forward to leading this course and meeting the Yoga Fundamantals student group!
