    Description

Are you spending your evenings writing your assignments? You probably do this on your own in your room or maybe in a library. Evidence suggests that when you study (or write) in a group, you are more productive as observing others working can motivate you.

This workshop is to create a writing community. Let us get together and write together, whether it is an essay, a report, a dissertation, a personal statement or a paper that you are writing. In addition, if you get stuck on something or you need any questions answered, I will be available to help.

Let us spend an hour writing together, I know I definitely have some work to get through and I hope to help you get through yours.

DISCLAIMER: I will not be able to write any assignments or personal statements for you and will not be able to reach conclusions for you, however, I can put you in the right direction for any referencing queries, where you can obtain research, explain any research methodologies you find confusing, any queries for structure or any general queries related to academic writing. I will not be able to ascertain whether you will meet your learning outcomes although I can help you understand key terms like 'analyse', 'discuss', 'appraise' etc. I cannot assure you that through this workshop you will pass an assignment or have a personal statement accepted. However, I can assure you that I will be able to develop your academic writing skills.

My name is Giliane McKelvin. I am a proud mother and wife first and foremost, but I am also a midwife and midwifery lecturer. I have been a midwife for over a decade after graduating from the University of Malta in 2010. I worked as a midwife in Malta for four years during which time I completed a Masters in Midwifery and Women's Health in UK.

This is when I started to fall in love with research and I focused my dissertation of the psychosocial impact of traumatic childbirth experiences which led to a number of publications. In 2014, I left the beautiful island of Malta and moved to the UK where I started working as a full-time midwife in a midwifery-led unit. At the same time, I was awarded a scholarship for a PhD from the University of Central Lancashire and I started working on my research project looking at birth experiences from a salutogenic perspective.

It was during my PhD that I found education. Having dedicated my life to women, I felt that the only way to help more women is to reach out and inspire the future workforce. So in 2017, I went into education as a full-time midwifery lecturer and quickly bloomed and started leading on curriculum developments by 2020.

Now, I am a Programme Leader for a midwifery programme and a senior lecturer, as well as, a Fellow in Education. I completed my PhD in 2019 but I continue to do further research. I strongly believe that it is only through research and a strong workforce that we can bring about change and protect the public. I find myself completely dedicated to students because they are the future but I equally believe that the vast majority fear research and not because they do not understand it but because research is misunderstood. I hope to be able to shed further light and empower students to use research to benefit the individuals in their care.
