Description
This session is primarily aimed at students who are going into their 3rd year at University. It will explore how you can develop your academic writing skills further with a specific focus on criticality, what this means and how it can be achieved. We will also explore how we can develop strong arguments and how to use research effectively with elements of original thinking.
Pre-requisites: Ideally you would have experienced Level 5 writing.
Requirements: This event will be held online using Zoom but you do not need to have a Zoom account. You will not need a camera or microphone as you will be welcome to ask any questions by typing. Once you register, you will receive details on how to access the event.
My background: I am a midwife by background and have been involved in midwifery research for over a decade. I completed a PhD in 2019 and continue to do research that aims to continue helping women achieve more positive birth experiences. While I have dedicated my life to women and their families, I cannot do this without the future workforce, so I have a particular passion for developing students as they are the future. I have been teaching at University level for over 5 years and I would not do anything else! It is my goal to help all students develop their academic skills and grow to be able to confidently advocate for women using most recent evidence.
Organiser
My name is Giliane McKelvin. I am a proud mother and wife first and foremost, but I am also a midwife and midwifery lecturer. I have been a midwife for over a decade after graduating from the University of Malta in 2010. I worked as a midwife in Malta for four years during which time I completed a Masters in Midwifery and Women's Health in UK.
This is when I started to fall in love with research and I focused my dissertation of the psychosocial impact of traumatic childbirth experiences which led to a number of publications. In 2014, I left the beautiful island of Malta and moved to the UK where I started working as a full-time midwife in a midwifery-led unit. At the same time, I was awarded a scholarship for a PhD from the University of Central Lancashire and I started working on my research project looking at birth experiences from a salutogenic perspective.
It was during my PhD that I found education. Having dedicated my life to women, I felt that the only way to help more women is to reach out and inspire the future workforce. So in 2017, I went into education as a full-time midwifery lecturer and quickly bloomed and started leading on curriculum developments by 2020.
Now, I am a Programme Leader for a midwifery programme and a senior lecturer, as well as, a Fellow in Education. I completed my PhD in 2019 but I continue to do further research. I strongly believe that it is only through research and a strong workforce that we can bring about change and protect the public. I find myself completely dedicated to students because they are the future but I equally believe that the vast majority fear research and not because they do not understand it but because research is misunderstood. I hope to be able to shed further light and empower students to use research to benefit the individuals in their care.
