Cancer is one of the most significant health challenges of our time, affecting millions of people worldwide each year. It is not a single disease but a complex group of over 100 different types of conditions characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. If left untreated, these cells can invade surrounding tissues and organs, potentially leading to life-threatening complications.

In 2020, there were approximately 147,000 deaths in England and Wales. Cancer can come to in different forms from breast, bladder and lung to skin and kidney cancers just to name a few. But there’s good news. Cancer survival rates are on the rise. During 2010/11 in the UK, 50% of those diagnosed with cancer survive the disease for ten years or more. This has doubled in the last 40 years. This is why the work done by cancer research is so vital and that early diagnosis is incredibly important.

Research continues to advance, with new treatments, including targeted therapies and immunotherapies, offering hope for better survival rates and quality of life for those diagnosed with cancer. Efforts to educate the public about prevention and the importance of early detection remain critical in the fight against this complex and diverse group of diseases.

Cancer’s impact is profound, but with continued research, public awareness, and a focus on prevention, the global community can work toward reducing the incidence and improving the outcomes for those affected by this disease.

4th February is World Cancer Day. Let’s show unity and support the fight against cancer with this unique virtual challenge. If you have suffered, or know of someone who has been diagnosed with cancer, then this challenge is a must.

You can play your part. As well as spreading awareness, sign up for this run and we will donate 10% of your entry fee to Cancer Research UK.
