    Description

    RPS Women in Photography

Join Marge Bradshaw for her OnlineTalk: Whose Menopause?

Using socially engaged practice and archive collections to challenge the narrative of menopause.

Marge will share the process of delivering ‘Whose Menopause?’, a 12-month socially engaged programme of work in Bolton, which was co-created with three community groups. The project used photography and sustainable cameraless methods to challenge the typical menopause narrative, which often excludes people identifying as LGBTQ+, working class or from the global majority. The group took inspiration from recipe books, botanical drawings, photographs and other ephemera in the Wellcome Collection - some of which can be seen in the project's resulting publication

Marge will talk about the benefits of using public archives and the realities of delivering socially engaged projects. She will also share her experience of designing and applying for project grant funding from Arts Council England. 'Whose Menopause?’ was supported by a range of community partners, including Bolton at Home, Indigo Gender Service, and NHS Bolton CCG. It was funded using public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Find out more about the project here.

    BIOGRAPHY

Marge Bradshaw is a socially engaged professional photographer and artist interested in people, places, and heritage. Since 2018, she has used a combination of documentary and portrait photography to share the stories and lived experiences of participants, typically giving a platform for voices that aren’t usually heard. She often draws on archives and collaborates with communities and individuals to make ‘useful art’ which aims to raise the profile of issues that are important to them. Her personal creative practice explores loss and fragility. She often draws on public and personal archives as inspiration and uses sustainable alternative processes, including cyanotypes and anthotypes. Her work has been exhibited at various museums and galleries, including Open Eye Gallery, RPS Gallery Bristol, Science Museum London, Museums Northumberland, Warrington Contemporary Art Festival, HOME and Bolton Museum and Art Gallery. She was shortlisted for both the British Journal of Photography's Portrait of Britain Volume 6 and the Royal Photographic Society's (RPS) International Photographic Exhibition 165 in 2023.
