After their online launch during the first lockdown back in 2020, Bad Betty Press poetry pamphlets War Dove by Troy Cabida and At The Speed of Dark by Gabriel Akamo finally get their live launch night turned second birthday party at The Jago, Dalston.
War Dove x At The Speed of Dark: An Evening with Troy Cabida and Gabriel Akamo is a poetry night commemorating the second birthday of the poets' debut poetry pamphlets, as well as a celebration of the poetry community that shaped them to be the artists they are today.
Come for an evening of poems, conversation and laughter at The Jago on Monday, 2nd of May from 7pm with host Jake Wild Hall, poet and publisher for Bad Betty Press, with supporting acts Kerrica Kendall, Hibaq Osman, Neimo Askar and Kirkann Roberts.
Troy Cabida is a Filipino poet, librarian and creative producer from south west London. His recent poems appear in 14poems, TLDTD Journal and bath magg as well as in anthologies by Vintage, Pan MacMillan and Orion. Previous performances include The RAP Party, BoxedIn and London Queer Poets. Troy has served as producer for London open mic night Poetry and Shaah and currently works as a Library Assistant for the National Poetry Library, Southbank Centre.
About War Dove:
‘This debut is a battle cry for our past and future selves, a serenade finding pleasure in the things that fight back.’ - R. A. Villanueva
‘There are lines that make you pause and think, and lines that shatter with the brilliance of quartz.’ - Romalyn Ante
Troy Cabida’s War Dove is a story of profound growth, of growing into oneself, of knowing tenderness, not as a skin to be sloughed on the way to maturity but a central muscle beating vital strength into the body. Cabida’s poetry refracts mental and emotional wellbeing through a kaleidoscope of cultural identities. This dove learns to soar and sway, heal and harden like ‘honey / crystallised and unflinching’.
Gabriel Akamo is a Nigerian-British poet, actor, facilitator, and creative producer. He has been previously commissioned by the Southbank Centre, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Royal Academy of Arts, and Gresham College, Guildhall. Previous festival performances include Lovebox, Bestival, and Festival Kometa in Riga, Latvia. His work has been published in a number of anthologies and is forthcoming in Before Them, We by flipped eye publishing. Gabriel is a proud alumnus of the Barbican Young Poets and the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain.
About At The Speed of Dark:
‘Gabriel’s poems in this enthralling book read like written records of spiritual revelations’ - Theresa Lola
‘We are held in Àkámọ́’s sermon of poems. We walk out remembering the holiness of being alive and the goodness we are seeking in ourselves and others.’ - Bayan Goudarzpour
In At the Speed of Dark, Gabriel Àkámọ́ pits the mind’s chiaroscuro against the many shades of grey that make up our reality. These questioning poems hold empiricism and faith, gravity and progress in the balance. Formally expansive, they play on the equivocation of white space, its ‘faux-quirky false irony’. Like an epiphany lost on waking, they entreat us to slow down, ‘reclaiming time, clawing back at the clearness of sky.’
Tickets for both the live event and livestream are available above.
Copies of the pamphlets will also be available for sale on the night.
See you soon!
