Biographies
Pianist Julia Cobby was born in London. She studied literature at Oxford University while continuing her piano studies with Paul Hamburger, who invited her to participate in his prestigious master class series in Austria. She has predominantly worked with singers, combining her loves of poetry and music, performed regularly in recital and for master-classes with Nicky Spence, Victoria Simmonds, Christine Sjolander, Julie Martin, Nuno de Araújo Pereira, and Joan Rodgers.
Alongside her performing career, Julia has worked as an Arts Practitioner both within schools and for various arts organisations in community-based opera projects. She is committed to developing young singers and pianists, holding regular master classes and curated concerts in and around her home in Margate.
Mezzo-soprano Shelley Cox graduated with Distinction from a postgraduate singing degree at Trinity Laban, where she was a Chapel Fund Scholar, and won the French Song competition. She now lives in Bristol, where she performs regularly as a soloist, and in roles for Bristol Opera and Tessitoura. Alongside performing and teaching, Shelley has contributed to a wide range of creative music projects, including interactive workshops for under-5s at the Wigmore Hall, song writing with primary school classes, pre-concert talks, devising projects with teenagers, and singing schemes with older adults.
Audience reviews from a previous performance this Paris programme
"We had a great evening with Cabaret Paradis. Wonderful music in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It was as if we were in a chic Parisian café. A little bit of Paris on a cold November evening"
"Julia and Shelley transported us to the cafés of Paris creating a delightful Parisian atmosphere. The set took us through from morning to moonlight, with just enough introduction to the songs so that we could follow the stories of the music. I would highly recommend Cabaret Paradis for a wonderful evening out"
"Cabaret Paradis’ performance was a fantastic display of talent which showcased a brilliant selection of French classical song with recognisable works in a beautifully set environment. The whole evening was brilliant and I can't wait to see them again"
"Voyage à Paris was fun, uplifting and completely unique. Julia and Shelley have great chemistry and are born performers. It's nice to bring such a performance to the local area".
"What a beautiful evening Julia and Shelley put on for us - the wet and windy North Kent coast was forgotten as we flaneured in our thoughts through les boulevards, accompanied by plangent chansons".

The Tom Thumb Theatre: A New Era of Magic by the Sea
Nestled in the heart of Cliftonville, Margate, the Tom Thumb Theatre has long been a beloved artistic gem by the sea. Originally built as a Victorian coach house, it was transformed in 1984 into one of the smallest theatres in the world — a curious and captivating blend of Japanese and Alpine architecture, with velvet seats, flocked wallpaper, and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else.
Now under the creative direction of Allyson Morgan Jones, the Tom Thumb is entering an exciting new chapter, bringing bold, imaginative programming to this beautifully intimate space. Alongside its roots in theatre, comedy, music, cabaret, poetry and film, the theatre is expanding its offering with immersive events, unique experiences, and bespoke private hires, all while continuing to champion emerging voices and experimental work.
