For Leeds Digital Festival we are screening David Cronenberg's groundbreaking 1983 science-fiction horror Videodrome in the Little Reliance Cinema!
Looking back at this technological satire today, Videodrome can be viewed as an eerily prescient cautionary tale for the digital age.
Max Renn (James Woods), a programmer for a trashy cable TV channel, goes looking for edgy new content and stumbles across a hyper-violent torture show called Videodrome. Whilst trying to uncover its origins, he goes on a hallucinatory journey into a shadow world of conspiracy, sadomasochism and bodily transformation. Deborah Harry stars as pop-psychologist and radio host Nicki Brand, in one of her earliest film roles.
With groundbreaking special effects makeup by Rick Baker, Videodrome has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and mind-bending science fiction films of the 1980s, and a prophetic vision of a society where technology has infiltrated every aspect of daily life.
