    Workshop structure:

    Day 1:

    Theoretical introduction (30 minutes):

A brief description of the use of masks in Venice with an explanation of the most significant model, the “Volto”, also called “Bautta” (This mask will be hand-made later in the workshop).

It is important for participants to understand the significance of the Bautta. This mask was an essential part of the unique Venetian lifestyle.

Moreover, to help participants visualize the role that the Bautta played in Venetian society, I will show them how it used to be worn.

Brief description of the creation of a typical Venetian mask and the ancient techniques used to make them.

I will show the stages of a mask’s creation process, from the clay sculpture to the finished piece, along with an introduction to the different materials used in the process.

    Practical element (about 1.30 hour)

Individual creation of the “volto” in papier-mâché, using a plaster mould and the paper.

The materials are simple and no tools are needed to make the mask other than the participants’ hands. This is the technique used 800 years ago.

IT IS NECESSARY TO ALLOW THE MASK TO DRY. THIS CAN TAKE MORE THAN 24H. THIS IS WHY THE WORKSHOP IS HELD OVER TWO SESSIONS, WITH THE SECOND SESSION BEING HELD ON THE SAME DAY THE FOLLOWING WEEK.

    Day 2:

    Theoretical element (20 minutes):

Explanation of the various techniques used to decorate masks.

There are 7 different techniques available. I will provide images with examples showing the end result of each technique.

Nevertheless, this is the creative part of the workshop; therefore, each participant has total freedom of expression in this process.

If the participant picks one of the techniques I have presented, I will demonstrate step by step how to recreate it. Even if the person is not a confident decorator, he/she will be able to end up with a creative piece.

    Practical element (1.30 minutes):

Once each individual has decided how to decorate his/her own mask, the decoration phase can start.

Acrylic tempera paints are used, metallic colours such as gold, silver and copper can be added for a bit of sparkle. Various types of wax can also be used to create a finishing touch.

Finally, the participant can choose from a number of different coloured ribbons to match their mask.

At the end of the workshop, each participant will take home his/her decorated mask.
