La Chimera" is a 2023 Italian film directed by Alice Rohrwacher, set in the 1980s in a small town on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The movie follows Arthur, a British archaeologist who, fresh out of jail, becomes involved with a group of "tombaroli" (grave robbers) searching for Etruscan artifacts. Josh O’Connor (The Crown, God’s Own Country) and Isabella Rossellini are well cast in this atmospheric tale of community, melancholia and gentle rebellion.
The Financial Times’ film critic Danny Leigh described the film as ‘rich and mischievous’ and praised O’Connor’s performance as a charming, but weary, chancer who is also beguiling and mysterious.
This film defies the usual genre rules and plays with different film stocks, a weird sense of time and a magical realism associated with the community to whom Arthur finds himself returning.
