Description

The last performance at Trip part of our international season, one that mixed, moved and mattered.

It has been a pleasure to host such a beautiful bunch of artists part of Intercontinental Drifts 2017: Laura Aris, Mirjam Sögner, Jasna L. Vinovrški , AWCD, The Uncollective, Roni Chadash, Piergiorgio Milano, Eleanor Bauer, Amy Bell, Elena Giannotti…

We embrace the end of this beautiful project with a wonderful programme:

DAN WATSON | Largely Unsung

This work starts with the music of the “Girl Group”. Their music had a longing to it, a desiring for something other, the mourning for the loss of something. It is trauma dressed as sequinned sugary pop. I am particularly interested in the role of the backing singer, their nonsensical language (sha-na-na) and their peripheral existence (at the back, off to the left). I think this has something to say about those of us who feel off centre-stage.

Dan Watson
Dan Watson is a London based artist working somewhere between dance, performance and messing about. He has worked with artists such as Gecko, Wendy Houstoun, Nigel Charnock, StopGAP, Stan Wont Dance, 5 Men Dancing and Slung Low Theatre amongst others. Dan has created Semi Detached, Precariously and Sweetest Things as well as the duet Jacket Dance. He has also created work for StopGAP, Flight Effect Dance and Them Two Dance.

Matthias Sperling | Do Not Be Afraid

Do Not Be Afraid proposes that the dance performer's superpower is the ability to make their mind visible for an audience, in and through their body. At the invitation of Tripspace, Krische and Sperling revisit the work for the first time since 2013.

Rachel Krische is an independent dance artist and Senior Lecturer in BA Dance and MA Choreography at Leeds Beckett University. With a professional career spanning 25 years, she has performed extensively, both nationally and internationally, collaborating with over 30 artists such as La Ribot, Wendy Houstoun, Deborah Hay and Siobhan Davies. Current research includes the collaborative project Body of Knowledge with Artsist/Scholars Sally Doughty & Lisa Kendall, co-produced by Dance4.

Matthias Sperling is an artist, choreographer and performer born in Canada and based in London. His work has been presented at Sadler’s Wells, Tate Modern, Southbank Centre and Dance Umbrella among others, and he is a frequent collaborator with Siobhan Davies, together with whom he has created several works. He was an Associate Artist with Dance4 and is the winner of a Bonnie Bird New Choreography Award.

Choreographer and performer: Matthias Sperling

Collaborator and performer: Rachel Krische

Created with support from Arts Council England, Pavilion Dance South West, Leeds Beckett University, Dance4, Laban Theatre, Nightingale Theatre and Greenwich Dance. With thanks to Matteo Fargion and Siobhan Davies for their artistic mentorship, and special thanks to Antonia Grove for performing the work when Rachel Krische was unable to perform due to injury.

Do Not Be Afraid was developed between 2011 and 2013. The first version was performed at Nottdance Festival, Lakeside Arts Centre, Nottingham on March 1, 2011.
