We’re very fortunate to have been able to arrange a tour of the Hackney Empire, led by the architect Tim Ronalds – a distinguished theatre architect who carried out the restoration works which were completed in 2004.
The exuberant, Frank Matcham designed Grade II* listed auditorium is one of the best examples of Edwardian variety theatre remaining in London. The 2004 refurbishment of Hackney Empire fully restored the interiors, added the fly-tower and provided new back-stage areas, topping it off with the sign 'Hackney Empire' in massive terracotta 6.4m tall capital letters.
