The World's Biggest Eye by Member Richard Hook
In this talk our own Richard Hook will explain how since the invention of the telescope more than 400 years ago astronomers have worked with engineers to build bigger and more powerful telescopes to probe the Universe. This quest is now entering a new phase with several optical telescopes with main mirrors more than 20m across under construction. This talk will give a very brief history of one of these monster scopes – the 39-metre ESO Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) in Chile – and highlight some of the new technology that has been needed.
Wells and Mendip Astronomers believe Space is or Everyone!
Our goal as an astronomy society is to engage with local astronomy and space enthusiasts to enjoy, share and develop their interests and skills. Our aims extend to increasing public awareness and outreach events at this very important time for science and space exploration through our programme of events, talks and star parties.
We would like to welcome anyone interested in astronomy; whether you are a beginner or experienced astronomer - young or old. We will do our best to help, so please come and join us.
