The Turbans are an international musical collective that brings together original compositions and traditional near-eastern and eastern-European styles, to create a modern and energetic performance with reverence for its ancient roots.

Founding member Oshan Mahony was born in Hexham and their recent album has been written and recorded in Northumberland so when they were booking a recent tour a debut gig in Newcastle was an important date to make!

They started in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2009 when classical violinist Darius Luke Thompson and guitarist Oshan Mahony played together for the first time. The duo travelled by bicycle to India, and were joined along the way by other musicians. This extraordinary project grew over the course of a few years, from very humble beginnings into a progressive name on the London music scene. Its members have gathered from countries such as Turkey, Bulgaria, Israel, Iran, Italy, Greece and England to perform in the UK, Turkey, Pakistan, India and Europe.

It has been an amazing journey and the band has taken the UK festival scene by storm, with a mix of traditional Balkan, klezmer, Turkish, Celtic and Greek traditional folk sounds. Their reputation as radical performers of real musical substance and prodigious energy is growing. Since setting base in London and inviting exciting international musicians to join them, they have delighted thousands with their musical melange of dancing entrancement.

Last year, The Turbans launched their first album of the same name with funds from a very successful crowdfunding campaign. The band, run by the musicians themselves, is set on making audiences dance with their vibrant, genre-hopping music.
