Description
"Woodshedding" is a musician's term meaning "going off to practice." It's typically used by jazz musicians to suggest a devotion to getting it right. Everybody at Smitty's spends significant time in "the shed", so we thought it would be the perfect name for our new weekly Thursday night concerts.
Each week we invite guests and friends from across the musical landscape into "The Shed". With Smitty's creative direction, they'll work on new material and collaborate with new artists to perform a specially curated and arranged set.
Passionate performers of repertoire both old and new, the Gildas Quartet has had the privilege of working with both Colin Matthews and Sir Harrison Birtwistle on performing the composers' recent string quartets at London’s Southbank Centre and The Forge. The quartet performed live via video link in New York's Carnegie Hall with the American Composers' Orchestra, giving the world première of Ray Lustig's 'Latency Canons' which received a glowing 4-star review in the New York Times. Tonight they'll play Schubert's 'Death and the Maiden' and Stravinsky's 'Three Pieces for String Quartet'.
