    Description

An Online RPS WIP Talk:  A photography and archaeology wellbeing project by Heather Laurence PhD

Photography is becoming increasingly popular as a tool for wellbeing, with evidence suggesting that the benefits already uncovered are but the tip of the iceberg.

Alongside the aforementioned benefits, we use archaeology too. As chair of the Archaeology and Heritage Special interest group, I could chat about the archaeology part of the project all day. However, I am not the archaeologist, this side of my skillset goes no further than a very keen amateur, the archaeologist in the project is my Husband. I am the therapist and photographer.

The Secrets of the Woods is a project combining both areas and as well as offering a practical, hands-on experience, our volunteers are also encouraged to look at the surrounding area, this is where the photography comes in as we uncover the secrets that the woodland area is keeping, whilst at the same time, embarking on an adventure into the past and moving forward.

Please join us to learn more about the photographs that we will be taking, the rationale behind them, and why we are working in that specific area. Before learning about the future plans of the project and where the images are to be used, exhibited or archived.

    Talk outline:

    · Wellbeing, how photography and archaeology work together as a tool

    · Why we are working in the area that we are

    · What we have done so far

    · What we are hoping to do

    · What the expected outcome of the project is

    · Future direction of the project.

    Biography

    Heather Laurence PhD

I got my first camera in 1982, a Kodak Instamatic to take with me on a school skiing trip to Norway. A second film roll, and four flash cubes. I was hooked! Fast forward to 2024 and I have never put a camera down. Even in my darkest of days, (and there have been many, including the loss of my child and several family members in close succession). Capturing images kept me sane. I look back at images that I took at the time, and they are not, as one would possibly expect, dark or dull, depressing images, they are mostly flora and fauna of the area at the time, the things that made me ‘feel better’.

I currently work as the editor and photographer of a lifestyle, arts, and culture publication, as well as being a professional photographer. I qualified many years ago as a mental health practitioner, working in a variety of fields, but using photography as a wellbeing tool, was often something I relied upon with clients.

My husband is an archaeologist, and as a ‘hobby’ archaeologist myself, I began to juggle the idea of combining both our interests into a wellbeing project, it didn’t take long for it to come together, and we are currently working on the Secrets of The Woods. A project aimed at reconnecting the community, enhancing wellbeing and education, using visual, auditory and practical hands-on experiences.
