    Description

The Rotters Opera is a new comic work written by acclaimed writer Carole Hayman (Ladies of Letters) and directed by Simon Yadoo (RSC & National Theatre), with musical arrangements by internationally renowned composer, Felix Cross MBE.

It is loosely based on a little known true story of the 1880 by-election that took place in the Parliamentary constituency of Sandwich (extended to include Deal and Walmer in the 1832 Reform Act), when bribing electors for their votes was commonplace.

Full of recognisable tunes, that will have your feet tapping, this humorous, satirical depiction draws on modern day parallels to show that political corruption is nothing new and brings to life the colourful and creative rivalry between the parties vying for bigger and more extravagant ways by which to swing the votes.

Shopkeepers, publicans, boatmen – anyone who had a vote or might influence someone who did – had a wonderful time. We hope you will too!

This performance is possible thanks to Arts Council & Heritage Lottery funding. Please note that this is the second stage in the Opera’s development and actors may be on book with script in hand for some parts.
