The Return of London: An Exhibition and newly commissioned work of art by Adam Dant celebrates a significant anniversary at The Church of St Martin in the Fields
A brand new commemorative printed map has been created by the celebrated artist-cartographer Adam Dant to mark the 300th anniversary of the first foundation stone being laid at the Church of St Martin in the Fields.
Unveiled for all to enjoy for the first time at The St Martin in the Fields Crypt Gallery 'The Novel Map of the Parish of St Martin in the Fields' forms the exciting centrepiece for an exhibition of the artist's lively depictions of London public spaces. 'The Return of London' is also part a wider series of activities which celebrate the 'reanimation' of the capital, with the church of St Martin in the Fields at it's very heart (www.stmartin-in-the-fields.org ).
The exhibition opens in the Crypt Gallery at St Martin in the Fields, running every day from the May 1st – May 8th between 12pm and 5pm and then from May 8th every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday each week, as part of The London Original Print Fair.
The Return of London at the Crypt of St Martin-in-the-Fields is open daily 12 - 5pm. Tickets are free of charge and bookings can be made via: https://lopf.artsvp.co/c77576.
Using Dant's novel map, visitors are encouraged to revive the tradition of 'beating the bounds' of The Parish of St-Martin in the Fields, walking its perimeter so as to reaffirm their memory of what was there before London went into 'lock-down'. This re-affirmation of memories is given a broad historical sweep on Dant's map as, alongside familiar landmarks and buildings, anecdotes and incidents from the lives of numerous former parish residents are recounted on the sites of their occurrence. The friendly personages of the parish's current residents are also dotted across the terrain, allowing map users to play a fun game of 'spot the local'.
Visitors to the exhibition will also be able to enjoy large scale prints from Dant's series of depictions of 'London Squares' including, on show for the first time, his vista of the tumult and turmoil of nearby Leicester Square, as well as maps that salute London's Theatres, Lost Rivers and in 'Viral London' the capital's vanquishing of plague and pestilence over the past 2000 years.
The exhibition presents a fine way to signal a re-entry and return of a London that has been undeservedly out of bounds for too long and to commemorate and salute St Martin-in- the-Fields’ significant 300th anniversary.
'The Return of London' is one of many activities taking place to celebrate our capital city, with The Church St Martin in the Fields at its heart. Located in the Church courtyard will be a series of photographs from 'the world's capital' during the pandemic, titled ‘Pandemic London’, as well as a separate series of photographs taken by homeless people during lockdown, titled ‘Out of Home’, capturing the essence of London over the past 12 months as COVID has spread. The two additional exhibitions are wonderful expressions of the pandemic seen through a series of heartfelt photographs.
