    Description

Sleeping, for us humans, is an essential element of our life that allows our body and mind to get recharged; it helps you feel refreshed and makes you very alert the time you wake up. Having good and healthy sleep helps the body to remain in a healthy condition and put off diseases. Having inadequate sleep has effects on the brain due to which it cannot function properly. This can have a negative effect on our ability to concentrate, think properly, and process our memories.

It is a fact that adults need to sleep with their sleep hours lasting within the range of at least seven to nine hours of sound sleep. For children and teenagers, they require a substantially more amount of sleep; particularly this applies to those who are younger than the age of five years. Some factors that prevent us from having a good sleep are too busy work schedules, day-to-day stressful tasks, an unhealthy bedroom surrounding, and other severe to mild medical conditions. However, a person who has a healthy diet chart and lives a positive lifestyle with a good number of healthy habits can help you get an adequate amount of sleep every night.

Chronic or short-termed loss or even lack of sleep could prove to be the initial symptoms of having a sleep disorder.

Our human body has an internal clock that helps regulate as well as runs according to our sleep cycle, this natural clock system controls when we would feel tired and would be ready for bed or would be refreshed and totally alert. The internal biological clock operates based on a 24-hour cycle typically called the circadian rhythm. Since the time we wake up from sleep, ultimately we would grow tired from whole day’s work. Our tired body gives us such tiresome feelings that tend to peak in the evening that would lead us to our bedtime.

This tendency of the body to feel sleepy and the upcoming sleep drive is also known as sleep-wake homeostasis; this is generally linked to a hormone called adenosine; it is an organic hormonal compound produced in the brain. The rate of Adenosine content in our body increases throughout the day as we become more tired, followed by the body breaking down this compound while we fall asleep.

One factor that plays an active role behind the quality and duration of sleep is ‘Light’; it greatly influences our circadian rhythm. In our brain there is a special region of nerve cells called the Hypothalamus; there is a cluster of cells in our Hypothalamus which is called the Suprachiasmatic nucleus, this helps in processing signals when our eyes get exposed to natural as well as artificial light. The signals that get processed help the brain in determining what time of day it is, whether it is day or night.

The moment of the day natural light disappears towards the evening; our body begins to release Melatonin; it is a hormone that produces drowsiness in our body. Towards the morning when the sun rises, our body releases a particular type of endocrine hormone that is called by the name Cortisol; this promotes energy and alertness.
