Description

Surrey singer Irene Shettle will be giving a talk on the life and work of the pioneering folksong collector, researcher and musician Lucy Broadwood (1858 - 1929).  Lucy Broadwood collected songs in Surrey and Sussex, as well as other locations across the UK.

Irene’s talk will include information about Lucy Broadwood’s folksong collecting and research, her musical family background, her work editing the FolkSong Society’s Journal, and her role on the committee of the Leith Hill Music Festival.  Irene will also be singing a couple of folksongs collected by Lucy Broadwood.

About Irene Shettle

Irene has lived in Surrey all her life and has enjoyed singing since childhood.  She has had a life-long interest in folksong and began performing solo floor spots in folk clubs in the early 1990s.  Her research into the life and work of the Victorian folksong collector and researcher Lucy Broadwood began around 20 years ago.  Since then she has presented talks and shows about Lucy at arts venues, folk clubs and festivals, history societies and community associations, and has been interviewed on both radio and TV.
