Description

What does the London Ear hear? What is it listening for?

Join us on a two mile guided walk through the City of London on a Sunday morning. From church bells to road crossings, we'll turn an inquisitive ear to the noises that control, affect and define us. We’ll tune into sounds of the past, like the birdsong that triggered a bucolic hallucination and the metallic scraping commemorated in a street name. And we'll investigate how London's soundscape is changing today as we echolocate through back alleys and round skyscrapers.

The London ear is led by Rosie Oliver. Hear Rosie introduce the walk in this 2 minute podcast.

What to expect

The London Ear offers a fresh perspective on the City of London, by thinking about sound and the act of listening. Tour goers will:

  • explore the area between St Paul’s Cathedral and Liverpool Street Station, with its ancient ways, hidden back alleys and futuristic skyscrapers.
  • take time to really listen to the sounds of the City.
  • find out about past sounds that have characterized the area, and what they mean.
  • hear about how London's soundscape is designed and managed, and ways that it is changing.

The walk contains stories, insights and surprises for those whose ear isn’t technically trained alongside the more musically minded. Tour goers will be guided to refine their ear for the City and pay attention to what they usually filter out.

Walk starts: Outside St Paul's tube station, by Caffe Nero on Panyer Alley. It ends near Liverpool Street station.

Suitable for: adults and young people aged 16 and over.

Maximum group size: 16.

The ticket price includes a noisy snack.

Cancellation policy: We can't offer refunds but given enough notice we may be able to offer a place on another walk.

Gift vouchers are available for this and other Dotmaker walks. The walks are also available to private groups.
