Workshop Details of what will be covered.

Session 1 —

NIGHT WALK – a selection of images taken in the small hours, after dark, both in urban and rural settings, and often in unexpected locations , although there are some notable iconic pieces of floodlit architecture. The pictures are about an atmospheric approach, and cover influences, nostalgia and techniques for longer exposures, painting with light, use of high ISO and monochrome. Technical aspects covered that will include problems to overcome, camera techniques and exposure, also ‘afterwork’ to give the final image the signature look I specifically want to portray.

Session 2 & 3— The 2 Print sessions

Part 1 Will be rather more coloured by technical aspects. The first session is about printing methods that apply to colour work, I’ll cover various essentials like calibration, paper choice, use of profiles etc alongside many examples of before and after, with some ‘step by step’ pieces to show how I got to the point when I felt ready to commit that image to paper. I’ll try and show how to print both harshly for vibrance and in a more delicate, lyrical way with subdued colour.

Part 2  The second session in a way mirrors the first – a brief re-cap , but then how that might be applied to Monochrome work and the variations on that, such as local tone control, use of contrast, gaining a mood, interpretation for drama etc. I’ll look at how to approach both Low and Hi key work I’ll cover some creative FX’s and sepia/blue , gold and split toning , alongside a glance at Infra-red.

Session 4 & 5 -
Hugh and I and the Work of Kathy Harcom pieces are collections with an appreciation, gently mentioning some technique but not more than a few hints about their approach and how they interpret the scenery – both are Landscape talks, but very different.

Both Hugh and Kathy show a very individual approach to the medium, their own personal signatures radiate from their wonderful prints.

Session 4 HUGH & I –

A pictorial essay about Hugh Milsom’s emotive and atmospheric landscape work.

Hugh and I covers a lifetimes work, peppered by some images of my own to try and compliment Hugh’s as mine were taken in the same locations as Hugh’s but not at the same time- well all except one. Hugh’s work has a light touch, but it is sincere, emotive and persuasive. He understands how to use tone, and atmosphere. HE uses strong foregrounds and linear graphics, but also geometry within his compositions. The work is from the UK, from Iceland, from national parks in the USA and from his early Infra-red darkroom period.

Session 5—THE WORK OF KATHY HARCOM

Kathy’s work is Darkroom based , with a section on New Zealand as digital panoramas. Her work is delicate, and about her response to light. She embraces a process called Lith Printing from her Infra-red negatives, which gives lovely subtle colouration to her work, a lot of it taken in The New Forest and Southern England. There’s a section on hand colouring, and some work on Sunflowers as well. Sadly Kathy is no longer alive, but her work is a very poignant and personal epitaph.
