HJC is thrilled to present Tenor saxophonist Jeremy Lyons and pianist Hans Koller, who's collaborative musical relationship over the years culminated in the 2016 recording, ‘The Promise of Happiness’.

This evening sees them team up with Marcus Penrose on double bass (Aurelius, Tom Neale Quartet) and Buster Birch on drums (Alison Rayner Quintet, Julian Nicholas Quartet), to play new original material alongside some new arrangements of older tunes.

    Jeremy Lyons

During his time at Middlesex, Jeremy formed his own quartet with Hans Koller, Dave Whitford and Stuart Laurence. Writing material for the band allowed him to develop his own style and sound, strongly influenced by the likes of Kenny Wheeler, Mark Lockheart and Stan Sulzmann. In 2011, he formed a new quartet with Ben McDonnell, Vicky Tilson and Buster Birch, and they released their debut album, ‘Vestige’, the following year.

Jeremy’s second album, ‘The Promise of Happiness’, is an album of self-penned compositions written for a small big band, and features some of the leading lights on the London jazz scene.

"Whilst the solos are first rate, they never overstay their welcome....impressive debut, elegant and heartfelt..” - Ian Patterson, allaboutjazz.com

"Lyons impresses with his power, imagination and fluency.....demonstrating his abilities on soprano with a slippery solo.... He more than holds his own in this illustrious company." - Ian Mann, thejazzmann.com

    Hans

Koller started playing in bands with saxophonist Stan Sulzmann and trumpeter Chris Batchelor and went on to form his own group, Neverland. This group was augmented into a nine-piece outfit for Koller’s début album Magic Mountain (1997), which established him as one of the leading new jazz composers in the UK. ‘New Memories’ (2002), was hailed as “the most expansive, expressive and exciting new jazz orchestral sound to have emerged in this country since the late-lamented Loose Tubes” by John Fordham in The Guardian.

An exuberant and remarkable talent, Koller’s music is full of surprises.” Ian Carr – Rough Guide to Jazz, 3rd edition / 2004

    Marcus Penrose

Originally from Cornwall, Marcus leads the Aurelius trio, featuring pianist Will Butterworth and drummer Marco Quarantotto. In 2018 they released their debut album, ‘The Process’. Marcus is also a member of the Tom Neale Quartet and Tom Jurkiewicz Trio.

I think it sounds fantastic. All three are playing beautifully. Great sounds, compositions and beautiful use of space. I’m very happy to have heard it.” Larry Grenadier

    Buster Birch

Buster is an award-winning drummer from London who has worked with many of the UK’s finest jazz musicians. He is the drummer for ARQ (Alison Rayner Quintet), winners of the Parliamentary Award for "Best UK Jazz Ensemble 2018", and has also published a series of ‘Beginner Jazz Soloing’ books for woodwind and brass instruments.
