Description

Our Theme: More Than Numbers: The Enduring Influence of Ethnic Entrepreneurs on Our City's Fabric.

The 'More Than Numbers' conference, organised as part of The Grand BAME Business Gala by the Diversity Business Incubator, spotlights the role of ethnic entrepreneurs in Plymouth's economy. Taking place at the Arts University Plymouth on February 2nd, 2024, this conference will feature enlightening discussions and networking sessions centred on diverse entrepreneurship.

Professor Monder Ram OBE, the Director of the Centre for Research in Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship (CREME) at Aston University, is a key speaker at the conference. A leading international scholar on ethnic minority entrepreneurship, Professor Ram has significantly shaped the field with his extensive research and commitment to engaged scholarship. His work, complemented by external research funding from prestigious sources and advisory roles, has been instrumental in supporting diverse business communities.

Dr. Laura Wallis, the Marjon Business Lead and Senior Lecturer at Plymouth Marjon University, will also be presenting. Her academic focus on lifestyle entrepreneurship, flexible working, and work-life balance, particularly in the lifestyle sports industry, brings a unique perspective to the event.

Together with panel discussions involving local business figures like Benson Campbell, Liliane Uwimana, and Fitz Spencer, the conference offers a comprehensive exploration of the challenges and achievements of ethnic entrepreneurs in Plymouth. This event serves as a catalyst for meaningful dialogue among business professionals, academicians, and community members, emphasising the DBI's dedication to promoting diversity in business as a cornerstone of Plymouth's socio-economic development.

In addition to the insightful talks, the conference will feature an exhibition showcasing local ethnic businesses. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the diverse range of products and services offered by these businesses, gaining a first-hand understanding of their operations and the challenges they face. This exhibition serves as an interactive platform for participants to engage in conversations about the lived experiences of ethnic entrepreneurs, providing a deeper appreciation of their contributions to the local economy and community.
