Description
A new annual film festival that recognises the major contribution that food and drink has played in the history of cinema launches for four nights from 29th January 2018. The inaugural Food Film Festival is presented under the auspices of the British Museum of Food, which was created by Bompas & Parr and which formally launches in 2018.
From films solely focused on food and drink to iconic scenes where food is crucial to plotline and narrative, to movies where film stars interact with food as an integral part of narrative or characterisation, the festival will shine a light on food’s crucial, and often quirky, role in cinematic mythology.
Jamie is an award-winning director and writer (Dinard British Film Festival – audience award – and Seattle International Film Festival – documentary) as well as receiving nominations for BAFTA (2012 and 2004), Broadcast Awards (2017, 2004), the British Comedy Awards (2011), British Independent Film Awards (2009) and Grierson Trust British Documentary Awards (200. His work covers documentary, animation and comedy/drama including his tributes to The British Minigolf team, breakfast cereals, the slowest swimmer in Olympic history, AI pet owners and his cinema documentary on Junior Eurovision 'Sounds Like Teen Spirit'. Jamie has also directed two series of C4's Fresh Meat and Sky 1’s An Idiot Abroad.
Our co-curator for the evening is Seb Cardinal from acclaimed sketch comedy group Cardinal Burns. Their surreal and off-beat brand of sketch comedy has been performed at the Edinburgh Fringe and E4. Cardinal Burns has earned widespread acclaim, garnering a BAFTA nomination for Best Comedy (2013), and winning Best Sketch Show at the British Comedy Awards (2012), where they were also nominated for Best Comedy Breakthrough Artist and Best New Comedy Programme.
This evening’s first screening will take the form of a hosted presentation from Jamie and Seb present a comedic romp through excerpts from their favourite food moments from the movies, food bloggers and social media, including Shaolin soccer: making buns; Brazilian documentary Isle of Flowers; How it's Made - The Chicken Factory; their favourite adverts including Tango and Lurpak; scenes from Charlie & The Chocolate Factory.
Ticketholders will also gain entrance to an accompanying micro-exhibition, Oranges & Death, which is inspired by the trope of the fruit within the world of films as a harbinger of death. Guests can buy a number of specially designed cocktails inspired by film and designed by the Mondrian's award-winning Dandelyan bar team.
