    Description

The Wave Pictures headline The End Festival's Saturday night!

This show includes The Oreilles, Beverly, Victor Lovlorne

Plus DJ John Jervis from The Hangover Lounge till 1:30am!

The Wave Pictures are David Tattersall, Franic Rozycki and Jonny ''Huddersfield'' Helm. In 1998 Franic and David lived in a village called Wymeswold where they started playing music together, with Hugh J. Noble on drums. The band was called Blind Summit. When Hugh decided he didn't want to play drums he went to Exeter to study Philosophy instead. The band changed it's name to The Wave Pictures. Hugh was replaced by several drummers, until Jonny "Huddersfield" Helm became the permanent replacement.

For a few years The Wave Pictures have played sporadically in the UK, France and New York. During this time highlights have included playing at the Mofo Festival in Paris at the invitation of friends Herman Dune, and playing shows with Herman Dune and The Jeffrey Lewis Band. David also sang The Wave Pictures song "Dust Off Your Heart" with Herman Dune on a radio session for the great John Peel. The Wave Pictures have also served as backing band and co-songwriters for John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats, the results featuring on a seven-inch single released by 4AD records.

Not only did I appreciate his take-no-prisoners musical stylings but also the imaginative lyrical ideas I found mighty refreshing. This is a man who clearly harbours no ambition to be seen hobnobbing with Dido at the Met Bar and has opted instead to plough a righteous but lonely furrow.

The Orielles... Surf pop garage music
The images of summer and the Pennines are not always easy to combine.

But in a corner of Calderdale, dreamy sounds of surf pop are transporting listeners to the sun-kissed climes of West Coast California.

Those in the pilot seat are three-piece teen band, The Orielles, who's lilting harmonies, jangling guitars and pounding wave-like bass sounds have been winning them devotees from across the UK.

Hailing from Halifax, they are one of the few bands putting the 1960s and 70s California sound back on the airwaves after a many a year lull.

It is the project of Sidonie Hand-Halford, 19, the drummer, her sister Esme, 17, singer and bassist, and guitarist Henry Carlyle Wade, 16.

Keen proponents of the DIY methods promoted by styles such as those within the Riot Grrrl scene, they only started to learn how to play their instruments after forming the band.

Victor Lovlorne grew up in a tiny East Texas town, where he sang in a youth gospel choir and developed an attachment to the bizarre and darkly miraculous, which pervaded the piney woods and wetlands of his rural home.

As an adult, he's lived the life of the common American good-for-nothing, unable to commit to any one place or job or love for long. Instead, he's found stability in his never-ceasing fascination with the experimental and conceptual, while finding a home in the songs of his youth.

Over time, as fate left him wounded and scarred from trying to love in a life like his, he's accumulated a large number of darkly romantic songs he's written. He's singing the best of those songs today, accompanied by an installation of blinking table lamps, noisily recorded piano, and the sounds of occasional birds and spaceships.

    He lives in Austin, Texas.
