INSPIRED - THE TIMES
Join The Dime Notes, London’s hard-swinging jazz band in a rare home-town appearance with their repertoire of blues drenched, clarinet driven 1920’s jazz.
Propulsive grooves and sultry melodies made early jazz revolutionary, controversial, and wildly popular. Since 2016 London quartet The Dime Notes have toured worldwide performing their hard-hitting concert programme of gems from the era. They return to the UK with a new concert programme, a new album, and a new pianist.
A punk rock attitude to early jazz
The Dime Notes have a reputation for an unorthodox approach to the blues-drenched sounds of clarinet-driven 1920’s New Orleans jazz. They’re also probably the most well-travelled of UK jazz bands with tours of Ukraine, Moldova, Japan, Germany, France, Canada, Scotland, N Ireland and Switzerland/Austria with their repertoire of stomps, blueses, and forgotten gems of the era from musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton, Johnny Dodds, and Red Nichols.
Fronted by UK clarinetist David Horniblow, much admired on jazz stages throughout Europe and America for his high energy Barny Biggard-esque delivery of hard driving swing and who’s travelled the globe with just about every UK classic jazz band. London-based pianist/composer/arranger Sam Watts is the latest to join the group, known for his focused creativity in an ever-growing number of musical styles and a regular with Jean Toussaint and Jason Marsalis alongside his recent Brazilian Jazz project The Curimba Trio.
The band is anchored by the unstoppable pulse of London’s knockout rhythm section. Guitarist Dave Kelbie is accompanist to many musicians in Classic and Gypsy Jazz such as Evan Christopher in Django a la Creole, John Etheridge, Don Vappie’s Jazz Creole, Fapy Lafertin, Tcha Limberger and Bireli Lagrene. Australian born bassist Mark Elton in demand both in Australia and in the northern hemisphere, and hand-picked by many for his infectious heavy groove and attention to style.
"David Horniblow’s clarinet spits fire" - The Sunday Times UK
"Those who love early hot jazz will certainly enjoy The Dime Notes’ reworking of these classics" - LA JAZZ SCENE US
"Their approach, although perfectly authentic in style, had a freshness and immediacy that was all their own" - The Observer UK
