Back at The Hamsptead Jazz Club, The David Gordon Trio brings you a night of refined and euphoric jazz music that ebbs and flows through compositions that showcase the tight-nature of this world-class outfit.
David is a world class talent with a playful sense of humour, which makes all his shows both musically innovative and a lot of fun.
Recognisably jazz, much of the music also draws inspiration from baroque music and particularly from the music of J. S. Bach. With its captivating title track “Pachyderm” is the trio’s seventh studio album and introduces a new trio line up with the award-winning Gordon joined by highly skilled drummer Tom Hooper and double bassist Oli Hayhurst, a vastly experienced musician who has worked with many accomplished artists.
The David Gordon Trio has a unique and individual sound world, a strong pedigree and a worldwide following. All their recordings have received rave reviews in media throughout the US, Japan and Europe, where they have sold more than 10,000 CDs. The trio has played festivals, radio and clubs in Europe and the UK, and has collaborated with a wide variety of artists, including singer Jacqui Dankworth; saxophonists Andy Sheppard and Jerry Underwood; guitarist John Etheridge; and tap-dancer/vocalist Lucy Dixon.
An assured and versatile pianist, David Gordon is one of the few professional jazz musicians who is also a well-established classical artist. An accomplished harpsichordist as well as pianist, David includes work as soloist/director with the likes of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, the London Chamber Orchestra and Concerto Köln and as an award-winning composer he has had works commissioned by festivals, orchestras and fellow musicians alike.
As a jazz pianist he has a repertoire that focuses on original compositions by the band, but also includes material as diverse as folk music from Venezuela, East European dance tunes and Celtic-tinged melodies.
After the critical acclaim given to the trio’s recent fascinating project “Alexander Scriabin's Ragtime Band” - ‘one of the finest trio records I have heard in a very long time’ (Stereopluss, Norway) and Mojo’s 'Jazz CD of the Year' - their latest project ‘Pachyderm’ marks a return to the group’s original compositions, flecked with occasional unfusty references to Bach and the baroque. Making up the rest of the trio will be Oli Hayhurst on bass and Tom Hooper-drums.
“There is plenty of variety within the music, but still a readily recognisable group aesthetic, and the quality of the playing and writing is excellent throughout.” – Ian Mann, The Jazz Man
‘David Gordon is a musician of dazzling range. Here he presents a playful, ingenious, irreverent and deeply respectful reimagining of the eccentric Russian composer’s oeuvre in which Scriabin’s music is filtered through Irving Berlin, foo-de-oh-do vocals, impressionistic jazz, ambient electro, samba, and whatever else occurs to the extravagantly resourceful pianist.’ - Mojo
