Of the three principal Allied forces involved in the Battle of Normandy, the UK was the only country not to have a national memorial in France to commemorate those serving under British command who were killed between 6th June and 31st August 1944. The British Normandy veterans saw that the veterans of Canada and America had one, but where was theirs? They wanted to correct this omission but at first had little success in getting support.
This would change thanks to the determination of one man, George Batts, plus a resolute group of Normandy veterans and a conversation which would eventually lead to the unveiling of the British Normandy Memorial in June 2021. Jane Furlong will tell the history of how it was built and recount the stories of those named on it, with a focus on those from the Kingston area.
6:30pm meet and greet with the talk starting promptly at 7pm and lasting approximately one hour
