    Description

The British Normandy Memorial, located in Ver-sur-Mer, France was unveiled on June 6th, 2021, the culmination of a campaign by Normandy veterans to create a memorial in France to over 22,000 of their fallen comrades of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. This talk will explore why they wanted to build it, reveal the stories of those commemorated on it and look at the future plans for the site.

Jane Furlong, is an expert in commemoration and memorialisation, having worked for many years at the Imperial War Museum on the UK National Inventory of War Memorials and as Head of Exhibits. Since 2017 Jane, a Kingston resident, has been the Lead Historical Researcher for the Normandy Memorial Trust, helping to discover the names of those killed on D-Day and the Battle of Normandy who were serving in British units. Jane is currently researching their personal stories which are published on the Normandy Memorial Trust website.

The talk is free but online donations will be welcome to support the ongoing work of the Normandy Memorial Trust. Details will be shared on the day.
