    Description

2015 is the centenary of the death of Philip Webb, architect, designer and friend of the historic built environment. In this talk, Ray Rogers will tell us about Webb and his building in Worship Street in the wider context of furniture trade buildings and workshops in South Shoreditch.

From the 1850s to the 1950s South Shoreditch was both the centre of production and the commercial heart of the English furniture trade as it underwent a transformation from a craft-based industry to one serving a mass market. Today the area is one of the best preserved of London's Victorian manufacturing districts.

Ray Rogers worked for English Heritage and was Head of Conservation and Urban Design at Hackney Council. In September 2014 he led a fascinating walk around Shoreditch for the Hackney Society.

This event is hosted by Holborn Studios, the film and photography studios housed in a historic building by the Regent's Canal. Food is available for purchase before the meeting, and the bar is open for a drink afterwards.
