Description
Nidal Younis is the Mayor of Masafer Yatta, and Owde Hathaleen, from Umm Al-Khair village, Masafer Yatta, and is a human rights activist and writer for +972 magazine. This event will be chaired by John Howard, a Methodist minister and a member of Durham Palestinian Solidarity Campaign, who has been an EAPPI in Hebron.
Nidal and Owde both advocate for a collection of 19 hamlets which make up Masafer Yatta. Masafer Yatta falls in the 60 percent of the occupied West Bank designated as “Area C”, under full Israeli military and administrative rule and is subject to severe and systematic settler colonial violence.
On May 4th, 2022, the Israeli High Court issued its final decision in a decades-long case, rejecting the residents’ petition to cease IDF evictions in the region, and giving the army the green light to forcibly evict these communities at a moment’s notice.
As the mayor, Nidal has been an integral part of the fight to ensure safety and security for the people and homes in Masafer Yatta against ongoing displacement and violence.
The event will be an opportunity for people to listen to Nidal and Owde’s eye witness account of the pressures being brought to bear on the villagers of Masafer Yatta to abandon their homes and livelihoods. It will also talk about how the events of October 7th has further impacted life in Masafer Yatta.
There will also be an opportunity to ask both Nidal and Owde questions in an open Q&A.
