Description
Hands Up is back with a party this autumn, Syria, Food for Thought, and it is going to play out on a delicious theme...
Come and join us for a feast of food (our head Chef at the Syrian Supper Club is teaming up with Dina Moussawi and Itab Azzam, the fabulous authors of Syria, Recipes from Home), cocktails with a middle-eastern twist and a chance to hear from some people who know Syria inside out. There will also be a prize draw with some truly mouth-watering things for you to win.
Syria, Food for Thought will be a night of celebration to raise over £50,000 for the aid projects we fund. It will also launch a campaign to encourage as many people as possible to hold their own Syrian Supper.
We'll be inviting all guests to put their money where their mouth is and pledge to hold theirs before March 2018. It is fun and simple to do, plus we can show you how. Imagine the impact of over 300 Syrian Suppers... if each raised just £100 that would fund the annual salaries of 5 doctors in Syria, whose work saves thousands of lives, or school meals for 800 children over a year.
It is easy to feel hopeless in the face of Syria’s increasingly brutal and long-lasting conflict... but we all have the power to do something. Syria, Food for Thought is your chance!
In the spirit of Syrian generosity, which know no bounds, in return for your pledge you will automatically be entered in to the grand souk of prizes full of the most mouth-watering items. We won’t spill all the beans yet, but think Heston Blumenthal, the River Café, Greg Malouf and a year’s supply of honey to name a few (we know!).
Where does the money go?
All monies from Syria, Food for Thought will go towards the projects Hands Up funds. We are currently supporting three which are implemented by our partner organisations on the ground:
- Prosthetic Limbs - three clinics, two inside Syria and one on the Syrian Turkish border
- Medical salaries - a team of 21 medical staff + costs required for them to do their jobs at a primary health clinic in southern rural Aleppo
- Education - a kindergarten in Idleb province
Where possible these projects are inside Syria and run by Syrians. Sustainability forms the basis of all the projects we choose, which is why we focus on funding salaries and long-term work in health and education. All these projects are monitored regularly and designed to have maximum impact for those in need.
We have witnessed first-hand the positive effect of direct aid in Syria. We hope that the Syrians we support will contribute to rebuilding and making their country, once again, a place where people can live in peace. For detail of the projects we fund, please see our website.
What are we eating and drinking - and will there be entertainment too?
For those lucky people who get tickets, there will be cocktails smoking with flavour, food from the Syrian Supper Club's head chef, Ruth Quinlan, in collaboration with the very brilliant Dina Moussawi and Itab Azzam (authors of the best book on Syrian cooking yet: Syria, Recipes from Home). There'll also be music to tap a toe to and a word or three from people who have first-hand knowledge of Syria and its conflict
What does my ticket include?
Tickets include entry, a free and delicious cocktail on arrival and a feast of food - isn't it great?!
Can I donate to the appeal?
Yes of course! You can do this here.
That's it, everything you need to know, so spread the word, ask your friends and buy a ticket quick, early birds catch the worm.
