    Description

From Robert Wiene’s THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1920) to Jordan Peele’s groundbreaking GET OUT (2017), horror cinema has harbored hordes of mind-controlling mesmerists. These Svengali-like manipulators are undeniably frightening, but they also illuminate something essential – and unsettling – about the nature of filmmaking and spectatorship.

Devious hypnotists appear in genre films as diverse as Fritz Lang’s 1933 masterpiece THE TESTAMENT OF DR. MABUSE, and Bigas Luna’s 1987 nightmare vision ANGUISH. But more than a source of cheap thrills, their preternatural powers reflect the filmmaker’s control over the minds of vulnerable viewers. At times the function of mesmerism has been more than allegorical, with directors such as Bernard Rose (CANDYMAN) and Werner Herzog (HEART OF GLASS) using hypnosis to augment actors’ performances.

In this lecture, film critic and author Adam Nayman will historicize hypnosis in horror cinema. His survey will identify hypnosis as both a provocative plot point, and a symbol of the filmmaker’s power in works like Brian De Palma’s SISTERS, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s CURE, Tilman Singer’s LUZ, and Lars von Trier’s EUROPA. After the Q&A, brave viewers will enjoy a brief demonstration of a hypnotic technique gleaned from our guest’s extensive research into this controversial topic.
