Steve Reich at 80
On the 3rd October 2016 (Steve Reich's 80th Birthday), contemporary classical pianist and Minimalism scholar Paul Cassidy gives the first UK solo performance of Reich's groundbreaking work Piano Phase.
Written in 1967, Piano Phase (for two pianos or marimbas) is Reich's first work for live performers that employs the same revolutionary 'phasing' technique that characterised his earlier tape compositions.
As a tribute to the composer on his 80th birthday, this is the FIRST time in the UK that Steve Reich's Piano Phase is performed as a solo work.
The concert will feature a short introductory lecture on Reich's music, given by musicologist and Minimalism expert Keith Potter.

Jeremy Barnett is an Australian-born musician living in London. He works as a percussionist, educator, improviser, composer, and electronic musician across all musical genres. Electric Counterpoint (1987) was written for guitarist Pat Metheney and is scored for soloist accompanied by a prepared backing track. In this version for electronic percussion Jeremy Barnett is faithful in every way to the original, but takes advantage of new technologies available to the percussionist. This allows him to meld Reich’s love of tuned percussion with a very contemporary sound. This version was most recently performed at OPEN Ealing (London) and the New England Conservatory of Music (Boston, USA).
