Please note: for in-person tickets please ensure you arrive promptly as you will need to be seated before 6:50pm to ensure the live streaming of the online event is not disrupted. Late comers may potentially not be admitted. Please can you take a lateral flow test on the day of the talk to make sure you are Covid-free before attending. These are not mandatory but we ask as a courtesy for the well-being of other attendees.
Following the success of their previous lectures on ‘Killed Cover Stories’, ‘The Big Book Look’ and getting ‘Out of Your Comfort Zone’, Ceara Elliot, Jack Smyth and Nico Taylor are hosting another evening of book design related talks focusing on the theme of ‘Same, but Different’.
There’s (hopefully) a brief, some (very well selling) comparison titles, sometimes a (first draft of a) manuscript, and a blank rectangle to be filled. If the process often starts with the same elements, how do book cover designers produce such different outcomes? Join us for an evening of investigation into those first steps taken by nine of the publishing industry’s finest designers.

David Pearson
David is a freelance book designer (of covers and complete books) and occasional teacher. He is a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale and was appointed Royal Designer for Industry in 2015. www.typeasimage.com
Jo Thomson
Jo Thomson is the Deputy Art Director at Fourth Estate and William Collins, London. She has also worked at Transworld and Pan Macmillan, as well as freelancing for year in Sydney, Australia.
Kishan Rajani
Kishan is a British-Indian book cover designer and illustrator, working at Vintage, Penguin Random House.
Jane Buckley
With over twenty years’ experience in Children’s publishing, Jane has worked for a wealth of publishers including Penguin Random House, Little Tiger Press, Kingfisher and Dorling Kindersley. Throughout her career she’s worked with a variety of award-winning illustrators such as Benji Davies, Sara Ogilvie, Nadia Shireen, Liz Pichon and Kate Hindley. Jane started her journey studying Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University, as a painter and film maker with a keen eye for a good story, the picture book world soon beckoned. Through her determination and hard work – she now finds herself as Art Director of Picture Books at Simon & Schuster UK.
Steve McCarthy
Steve McCarthy is an Illustrator and Author from Dublin Ireland, who moved to London at the end of 2019, he has made award winning children's books, and award adjacent work as key background designer at Cartoon Saloon, for the Oscar nominated Song Of the Sea, his first self authored picture book "The Wilderness" launches this autumn with Walker books.
Ami Smithson
Ami Smithson is a print designer, specialising in book covers and text design. She works freelance (Cabin London) and at Pan Macmillan.
Henry Petrides
Having studied fine art, Henry Petrides worked freelance in children’s illustration and costume design before an unexpected book cover commission kickstarted his career in publishing. Joining Penguin Random House in 2017, he has since risen to Senior Designer at Cornerstone, working across fiction and non-fiction imprints designing covers for authors including Jeanette Winterson, Lauren Groff and Michael Palin.
Loulou Clark
Loulou joined PRH as Ebury’s first ever Art Director in 2020 and leads all design for their huge range of Non-Fiction publishing from lifestyle, entertainment to smart thinking and self care books. Prior to that, Loulou designed for Orion Publishing.
Greg Heinemann
Greg is Deputy Creative Director at Bloomsbury Publishing, where he designs and illustrates literary fiction and non-fiction book covers on the Adult Trade list. Beginning a cover design career at Vintage (Penguin Random House), he has produced jacket designs for Pulitzer, Booker and Women's Prize winning titles, and has won D&AD, BBDPA awards, and a finalist for many others.

Established in 1891 with a clear social and cultural purpose, St Bride Foundation is one of London’s hidden gems.
Housed in a beautiful Grade II listed Victorian building, St Bride Foundation was originally set up to serve the burgeoning print and publishing trade of nearby Fleet Street, and is now finding a new contemporary audience of designers, printmakers and typographers who come to enjoy a regular programme of design events and workshops.
Many thousands of books, printing-related periodicals and physical objects are at the heart of St Bride Library. Volumes on the history of printing, typography, newspaper design and paper-making jostle for space alongside one of the world’s largest and most significant collections of type specimens. The printed, written, carved and cast word may be found at St Bride in its myriad forms. Architectural lettering and examples of applied typography in many media, together with substantial collections of steel punches and casting matrices for metal types are also held in this eclectic collection. The Reading Room is open to visitors twice a month and on other days by appointment. Although we operate on a cost-neutral basis, it is necessary to charge for some of our services. St Bride retains many of its original features, including the baths, laundry, printing rooms and library. As part of the Foundation’s original mission to provide for the community, many of the building’s unique and characterful spaces are available to hire whether for meetings, weddings or classes.
St Bride also houses the popular Bridewell Theatre, and Bridewell Bar (once the laundry), and hosts a year-round programme of plays, comedy, music and exhibitions.
With some 65,000 visitors a year St Bride Foundation is a major London hub for the creative arts in London. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

I have not received my Same, But Different ticket via email. What should I do?
The first thing to do is check your spam/junk filters and inboxes. Your Same, But Different tickets were sent as an attachment and can be thought of as spam by some email services. Alternatively, you can always find your Same, But Different tickets in your Billetto account that you can access in the browsers or the dedicated Billetto app. For more help with this, read here.

I wish to cancel my Same, But Different ticket and receive a refund. What should I do?
The approval of refunds is entirely at the event organiser’s discretion, and you should get in contact with the event organiser to discuss what options are available to you.
