Rising star saxophonist Sam Glaser brings his all-star quintet to the HJC for his debut performance at the club. Sam is renowned for his warm and distinctive alto sound, lyrical improvising, and virtuosic playing. The show will feature brand new original compositions, performed by some of the most in-demand musicians in Europe. You can expect to hear soaring melodies, rich harmonies, and fireworks between the musicians as they navigate this exciting new music. Get your tickets early, this show is not one to miss!

Sam Glaser is an alto saxophonist, composer and bandleader based in London, UK. He is a virtuosic improviser and a unique voice on the UK jazz scene, and his warm and distinctive saxophone sound, paired with lyrical, energetic, and emotive playing, have led to renown amongst musicians and listeners alike. Sam’s saxophone playing is firmly grounded in the history of jazz music but takes great inspiration from modern masters including Will Vinson, Chris Potter, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Ben Wendel.

Sam graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2016 with a 1st class honours degree in jazz saxophone, where he studied with some of the UK’s leading jazz musicians including Julian Siegel, Iain Ballamy, Nikki Iles, James Allsopp, Gareth Lockrane, and Tom Cawley. He was also a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra between 2013 and 2018, where he held the principle alto chair for two years and during which time performed with artists including Gregory Porter, Clare Teal, Zoe Rahman, and Jason Yarde. He was also a featured soloist on the studio album “NYJO 50”, released on Whirlwind Records in 2015.

Highly sought after, Sam has performed with leading musicians and bands including the Tom Smith big band, Patchwork Jazz Orchestra, the Gareth Lockrane Big Bang, Adam Woodcock’s Meridian, and the Tom Niblock big band. He was a featured soloist on Stan Sulzmann’s “Mon Ami”, released in 2021, and recorded for Slowly Rolling Camera on their record “Juniper”, released on Edition Records in 2018.

Gareth Fowler:

British Guitarist, Gareth Fowler, graduated from the Manhattan School of Music in 2018 where he studied privately with Rodney Jones, John Riley and Dayna Stevens. ​

Gareth has performed at Carnegie Hall NYC, the 55 Bar, Bar Next Door, throughout the UK, Europe, South Africa, Malaysia, Mexico and Hawaii.

​Some artists Gareth has performed with include, Percy Purseglove, Mike Williams, Pablo Held, Naima Acuna, Chris Potter, Julian Arguelles, Troy Miller, Andrew Bain, Alec Harper, Laura Jurd, Steven Fiefke Bigband, JK Kim, Mark Hodgson, Alex Merrit, Elliot Samson, Jeremy Price, Henry Lowther, Art Theman, Perico Sambeat. He has also performed on an award nominated set of works by UK Jazz saxophonist, Mike Williams.

Chris Eldred:

Chris graduated from Trinity College of Music in 2011. He one was one of six winners of the 2011 Yamaha Scholarship Award for Outstanding Jazz Musicians. During this time, he also held the piano chair with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

​Chris has since performed and recorded with big bands such as the Louis Dowdeswell Big Band and Syd Lawrence Orchestra. He has worked in small groups on the London scene, frequenting Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Dean St and the 606, and has appeared twice at the BBC Proms (in 2012 and 2024.) He is a member of UK touring band Hejira (celebrating the music of Joni Mitchell.) Chris has shared the stage with UK artists including Tunde of the Lighthouse family and Joseph Lawrence (notably supporting Rag and Bone man.) Since 2014 Chris has regularly played on the long-running jazz-age experience “58th Street.”

​Chris has recorded on albums by Noemi Nuti, Callum Au, Louis Dowdeswell, Joseph Lawrence amongst many others. His musical life has also included leading his own jazz trio at Ronnie Scott’s and elsewhere and singing with the London Vocal Project since 2015.

Niklas Lukassen:

Niklas has accompanied performances with artists such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Joe Lovano, Jorge Rossy, Norma Winstone, Jo Lawry, Will Vinson & The New York Voices. Among the records he played on is the Grammy Award Nominated album Some days are better by the Kenny Wheeler Legacy Project. Niklas has toured extensively throughout Europe, the UK, North America, Asia and North Africa. Notable stages he performed on include the Lincoln Centre, the Beacon Theatre, the John F. Kennedy Centre and the Berlin Philharmonie.

Niklas recently released his debut record ‘Still Waters’ on Heartcore Records with his international quartet, featuring saxophonist Ben van Gelder, pianist Kit Downes and drummer Francesco Ciniglio, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, saxophonist Wanja Slavin, vocalist Céline Rudolph & trombonist Geoffroy De Masure.

Marc Michel:

Marc has performed and recorded with leading jazz musicians from around the world, including Ben Wendel, Seamus Blake, Will Vinson, Chris Cheek. Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mike Moreno, and David Friedman. Originally from France, he moved to the UK to complete a post-graduate at the Royal Academy of Music. Now residing in Berlin, he is one of the most sought-after drummers in Europe.

Please note the Jazz Club is situated in the basement of the Duke of Hamilton Pub and access is via a number of stairs. The nearest toilets are situated on the 1st floor of the Pub.
