“Jones is pure class” – The Times
Rare opportunity to see and hear one of the acknowledged great interpreters of song with her terrific jazz trio in a small club setting.
Salena Jones's career has spanned the world, and she has worked with a who’s who of legends, including Louis Armstrong and Sarah Vaughan. Impressively, she has released 43 albums to date.
Described throughout her career as one of the world's great jazz singers, and by some as “not altogether a jazz singer”, Jones's cool, relaxed phrasing and delivery is wonderfully free from artifice. At the lower end of the register, her voice is smoky and sensual. Not for her, though, vivacious displays of double-time gymnastics or virtuoso scat choruses; she is a storyteller who allows the lyrics to speak for themselves and although ballads are her strongest suit, she swings with the very best.
Almost impossible to categorise, the attraction lies in her voice quality pure and simple. She is totally comfortable in diverse styles that she makes completely her own: blues, jazz standards, pop and latin.
Born Joan Shaw in Virginia, she grew up in New York around legendary musicians like Miles Davis and Stan Getz, recording demo tracks for artists such as Peggy Lee and Lena Horne, and had released 15 records before she was 15 years old. Growing racial tensions prompted a move to Europe and saw her name-change to Salena Jones, with fans across the world recognising her, to quote her Asian fanbase, as “The Queen of Jazz and Blues”.
Jones still holds the record for the longest residency at Ronnie Scott’s, a remarkable seven weeks, where she regularly still sells out.
REVIEWS
TIME OUT - “Stunning British based US singer, Salena Jones has a touch of Sarah Vaughan in her technique and a great feel for working intimate jazz venues. She's on great form, packing a soulful and emotional punch live”
THE TIMES ARTS - “Her tribute to the great Brazilian songwriter, Antonio Carlos Jobim, confirmed her place in the front rank of singers. Infinitely versatile she can swing from jazz standards to more intimate material.
EVENING STANDARD - “Disciples who hung on her every sound at Ronnie Scott’s for years will know just what the velvet voice can do to jazz, blues, ballads and pop”
