Description
We have another chance to spend a whole day at one of Britain’s most important and comprehensive collections of native animals and birds, capturing the sort of images that would normally take lots of preparation, patience and luck. We will be the only group and will have special access to enclosures.
With the services of an experienced keeper we will go inside the enclosures of foxes, otters and wildcats when they come to be fed, photographing from only a few feet away with no barriers, and against a natural background.
We meet (with coffee and tea provided) at 9.30am when the centre is closed to the public and so we have it to ourselves all day. The photography will concentrate on mammals, including badgers, red squirrels, polecats, hedgehogs and harvest mice, in addition to the ‘Big Three’ above that in the wild are so elusive. There are also owls, the final selection being made by the staff on the day, dependent on the weather and the condition of the animals.
A light sandwich lunch is included and we plan to finish around 4.30pm, so you will need spare batteries and memory cards. Most cameras are suitable including DSLRs or mirrorless. In the enclosures short telephoto lenses work well, and a macro is suitable for the smaller subjects. It’s unlikely you will need anything longer than 200-300mm, and a tripod is optional.
The British Wildlife Centre is situated on the A22, just north of East Grinstead (post code RH7 6LF). There is plenty of free parking, we meet in the adjacent entrance building. This is an all-weather event, the animals are hardy and not put off by rain. So wear appropriate warm clothing, waterproofs are useful too, even in the dry to get low for eye level shots.
To maximise time on the day spent photographing there is an option to meet via Zoom a few days before the event, to introduce ourselves and discuss any equipment or technical considerations, and afterwards to share a few of our successes, which will be numerous!
The cost is £135, which is very competitive, but places are limited.
