Rowland Sutherland Trio
Rowland Sutherland | Emi Watanabe | Beibei Wang
Led by Rowland Sutherland, this trio features three soloists, of different backgrounds and traditions, merging together to perform radiant improvised music, blended with moments of traditional Japanese songs alongside hazy Caribbean and Chinese themes in a refreshingly contemporary setting.
Expect a vibrant interplay of otherworldly flute expressions, electrifying electronic percussive pulsations and waves of sounds, volatile exclamations, through to serene, peaceful meditative floating tones and flickering water drops that fill the airwaves of the auditorium. A stimulating marriage of different elements intertwining into one magical form.
'Their music is full of invention, sensitive playing and beautiful sounds.’
Rowland Sutherland enjoys an international career in many different fields of music. He regularly performs in jazz groups, improvised music settings, new music ensembles, symphony orchestras, various non-western groups, pop outfits and as a soloist. Many of Rowland’s solo contemporary flute performances have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 UK. He has performed with such renowned soloists as David Murray, Joji Hirota, Henry Threadgill, George Benson, Evan Parker, Mieko Kanno, Carla Bley, King Sunny Ade, Luciano Pavarotti, Nitin Sawhney and Joss Stone. He made his BBC Proms debut as soloist during the 2006 season performing Steve Reich, for his 70th birthday celebrations at the Royal Albert Hall.
