Description
Discover the potential of retro reflective material: it is everywhere around us but often
overseen! You probably associate this material with high visibility clothing such as
yellow vests, but when looking closer at the material, it can be so much more than
that. During this workshop, product designer Julie Thissen will show you its potential and you will take it
completely out of its “construction site” and “traffic equipment” context, connotation
and aesthetics. We will use examples of collages and patterns as an inspiration
source to create compositions with reflective material, applied on textile. The result
will be a beautiful scarf that can be worn and used everyday.
Julie Thissen is a French/Dutch product designer and graduate of ENSCI-Les Ateliers in Paris. After working for the studios of François Azambourg and Chris Kabel, she set up her own product design studio as well as the label The Cyclist, which focuses on accessories for urban cyclists and commuters. From her studio in Rotterdam, she creates objects in which she likes to blend together functionality, aesthetics, ornaments and patterns. By setting her focus on materials and production processes, her design approach aims to integrate two fundamental principles: a product has to be practical to use and pleasing to the senses.
The workshop is open to a maximum of 10 participants (age 12+) on a first come, first served basis. Attendance at the workshop costs £35 (£25 students) with all proceeds supporting the SCHOOL SCHOOL after school club for the local state school students.
