Making Data make Sense
Data is playing an ever increasing and powerful part in our decision making, whether that’s influencing the decisions of others, or being presented with data designed to influence our own decisions. Then there’s the emergence and rapid growth of open, big and social data, creating new challenges, opportunities and insights.
With greater volumes of more complex data, it’s becoming increasingly critical to be “data savvy”, having a good grip and understanding around how data is best used, analysed and interpreted, as well as the pitfalls. This course is not about statistical techniques, but providing the overarching rigour for thinking about, approaching and using data well. It provides a framework with practical hints and tips for confident and convincing use and challenge around data.
Drawing on real world examples across a range of sectors, it includes themes such as:
- new communication, including data storytelling, visualisation and infographics;
- trends and trajectories;
- surveys and samples;
- error and uncertainty;
- relative and absolute risk;
- correlation and causation;
- accuracy and precision.
Paul Askew has led high profile and high stakes quantitative programmes including national policy, regulatory and operational analysis, and across a range of sectors in including policing, education, health, housing and culture.
