Tin and Lithium Granites: From the bottom up
Join us for our penultimate Public Lecture of 2023 with Nick Gardiner. Our lectures are free for all to attend, both in person and virtually via zoom.
The transition to a renewable energy platform requires a sufficient supply of key metals, in particular the so-called “battery metals” tin and lithium. These metals are primarily sourced from magmatic-hydrothermal deposits, which form when mineralising fluids exsolve from evolved, volatile-saturated magmas. Although historically studied, there is now a renewed interest in both tin granites and lithium pegmatites due to their economic importance, and there is an opportunity to deploy modern crustal evolution techniques – both analytical and modelling – to understand their genesis.
We show how geochemical microanalysis of accessory minerals can help shed light on the processes of crustal melting and of fractional crystallisation, which together lead to mineralization, and how such a bottom-up approach may help us build better models for the formation of these deposits. We also discuss how in a global mining context these battery metals are relatively small-scale, with a fragile supply pipeline, and by taking the example of tin in the 2000’s explore the current rush for lithium.
Speaker Bio
Nick Gardiner is Senior Lecturer at the University of St Andrews. A petrologist and geochemist, he works on crustal evolution processes with a current research focus on both granite-hosted critical mineral deposits and early Earth evolution through the lens of mineral chemistry. He has worked on tin deposits in Myanmar, Rwanda and South Africa, and more recently focused on lithium projects in Zimbabwe and Namibia. He studied Earth Sciences at Oxford, did a Geochemistry MSc at Leeds, and returned to Oxford for a DPhil in metamorphic petrology and isotope geochemistry. After working in commodities trading for nearly a decade, he returned to academia with research positions back at Oxford and four years in Australia, before joining St Andrews in 2019.
Tickets are available for both In-Person attendance and virtual attendance via Zoom. The Zoom link for virtual attendees will be emailed out the day before the event.
