Event Details

The world we live in is changing. Now, more than ever, countries are striving to utilise green technologies (e.g., solar panels, wind turbines) to reduce global emissions and impacts on the environment. As our world embraces these technologies, the demand for raw materials continues to increase, with many countries now pulling from the same resource pools. As a result, we need to consider how we will obtain these resources on our journey to a just energy transition.

But what does a ‘just transition’ mean? This term is widely used but can mean different things to different communities and stakeholders. In this talk, Dr Doran will consider diverse perspectives, including research, ethical sourcing and accessible geosciences as well as some of the key challenges facing the geoscience community. She will also dig into some of the research contributing to our understanding of the formation of the metals, exploring the role of geoscientists in this just transition.

Speaker

Dr Aileen Doran is a Sustainability and Raw Materials Consultant with Satarla based in Ireland. Until 2024, she was a researcher in Economic Geology and Geochemistry with UCD and iCRAG, gaining extensive expertise in sediment-hosted copper-zinc-lead systems. During her time at UCD, Aileen became passionate about sustainability and responsible sourcing of raw materials, becoming involved in several engagement opportunities along this theme. She is also the 2024 MDSG ECR Distinguished Lecturer, delivering talks across the UK and Ireland on the geochemistry of ore systems and responsible and ethical sourcing of raw materials.

Aileen also has a strong background in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), and is committed to ensuring inclusive environments for all. She has undertaken several research projects exploring EDI in geoscience, and in 2020 co-founded the EDI in Geoscience (EDIG
