    Description

    Event details

Geologists have an important role to play in ensuring wise planetary stewardship and delivering improved human wellbeing. But conveying this critical role to non-geologists is hindered by difficulties in conveying our science to lay publics and policy makers. Therefore, geologists need to become better communicators, storifying their science through more compelling and engaging narratives.

Drawing on firsthand experience of both documentary film-making with broadcast media and interdisciplinary collaborations between scientists and non-technical end-users (from politicians to communities), this talk will explore this principles and practices of re-storifying planet Earth.

    Speaker

Prof Iain Stewart (University of Plymouth)

Iain Stewart is Professor of Geoscience Communication at the University of Plymouth (UK), where he also holds the UNESCO Chair for Geoscience and Society. His research interests are in disaster risk reduction, climate change, and Earth science communication. His Earth science communication work has involved a 15-year partnership with BBC Science making popular television documentaries about planet Earth.
