Psychedelic Healing: The Therapeutic Use of Psychedelic Substances
Psychedelic plant medicines and magic mushrooms have been used for physical and psychological healing for many thousands of years. The 20th Century saw worldwide interest in these traditional remedies, as well as novel ones such as LSD and MDMA. Almost all were eventually banned following the moral panic of Nixon's 'War on Drugs'. In recent years, despite considerable obstacles, researchers have begun to prove the usefulness, safety and effectiveness of psychedelics.
Speakers will include: Dr Ben Sessa of Bristol University, pioneer of MDMA assisted therapy in the UK; Rita Kočárová, researcher on ayahuasca and psychotherapy for addiction; Dr Anna Waldstein, anthropologist at the University of Kent, speaking on cannabis in Rastafari communities; and Stephen Reid, Director of the Psychedelic Society.
This launch event for the Psychedelic Society of Brighton is an opportunity to learn about and discuss the therapeutic, cultural, recreational and spiritual aspects of psychedelic substances. The Society is a branch of the UK Psychedelic Society.
*Psychedelic Social*
At 6pm, immediately following the Psychedelic Healing event on Saturday 26th November there will be a gathering in All Saints Church, including wonderful vegan food from our friends at Old Tree Brewery & Cafe. Entry is FREE.
The social will be an opportunity to gather informally, brainstorm ideas for the Psychedelic Society of Brighton, talk to our speakers and get to know each other. We'll use what we learn to plan our events for 2017. The Society belongs to YOU, so let us know what it is you want.
It will also feature Psychedelic Stories, with short (5-10 minute) tales from the psychedelic frontier. If you have a story you'd like to tell, particularly one on the theme of healing, please message us.
Food will be vegan curry and salad.
