Description
To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love, the Psychedelic Society of Brighton bring you The Sunshine Makers, the story of Nick Sand and Tim Scully, the unlikely duo at the heart of 1960s American drug counter-culture. The film will be followed by speakers and an afterparty presented by 3EYE.
7.30pm The Sunshine Makers
Followed by reflections and stories from the psychedelic world over the past 50 years. Our speakers represent three generations:
* Melinda Gebbie
Bold, masterful and unafraid, Melinda is the definitive Bad Girl of the Avant-Garde comix world. She lived through late 60s Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco, beginnings which she has mirthfully and mercilessly dissected. Her definitive graphic novel Lost Girls, a collaboration with husband Alan Moore, is a sexual-psychedelic adventure featuring Alice in Wonderland, Dorothy and Wendy fed by her curiosity about why women were forever keeping their sexuality a secret.
* Craig Inglis
Craig A. Inglis's time in California in the 80s and 90s with Dr John C Lilly - famous for his work with Cetacean inter species communication and mapping the mind with LSD and floatation tanks - brought him into contact with most of the leading figures in the psychedelic/ human potential movement. Craig's unique life story includes luminaries such as Tim Leary, Ralph Metzner, Ram Dass, Laura Huxley, Terence McKenna, 'Sunshine Maker' Nick Sands and many more. Craig spent the last 20 years back in England furthering Dr Lilly's work with floatation tanks, co-founding communities, festivals and conferences while continuing to explore with those in the current avant-garde of psychedelic culture.
* Maria Papaspyrou
Maria has worked as an integrative psychotherapist in the fields of mental health and education, alongside her private practice. Her research interests have focused on the interface between entheogenic experiences and psychotherapy, as well as the intersections between the archetypal feminine and altered states of consciousness. She has given talks and published articles in both festival and academic circles on the sacramental and healing properties of entheogens, supporting their re-introduction in psychotherapy.
9:30pm 3EYE Disko’s Summer of Love
3EYE DJs play music to inside-out-outside-in your perceptions in a dancing, spinning, diving into a cool pool of sunshine and overwhelming fire. Sounds from before 1967’s moment zero and after it, the second Summer of Love and furthur and faar. Hold no prisoners. Take every chance. Get In To Get Out. Dance!
Plus Puppets Alan Watts and Timothy Leary in conversation, dress up to get down, astral projections, performances (tba), interventions (tba) and surprises!
The only war that matters is the war against the imagination. Holy, fierce, precise, vast, elegant, light.
This is not a drill and not a turn back time into peak nostalgia. We celebrate the enduring and valuable influence that the 1967 Summer of Love and the stories that surround it have on us and on our psychedelic culture. Everyone is welcome (No Dicks).
Space for the film screening are limited to 120 (event capacity 200) - first come first served on the night.
